I received a copy of Attack of the Frawgs for Dungeon Crawl Classics from Thick Skull Adventures but had a really limited amount of exposure to the system beyond reading the rulebook, so I felt like I wasn't in a fair position to do a review. Well in the last couple months I had several opportunities to gain some exposure to this system and now I feel comfortable to take an objective look at Attack of the Frawgs, by Stephen Newton with artwork by Catherine Harkins and cover art by Andrew Harkins. The adventure is written for 8-14 0-level characters but could be adapted to 1st level characters, will talk more about that later.
The cover art on Attack of the Frawgs really brought me back to the older days of D&D, which is one of the bigger reasons the systems appeals to me. The frawg on the cover sets the mood and is an excellent resource for the judge (I don’t like such a generic term) to use to show the players what they are dealing with when the time is right.
The adventure starts at an inn, which many great adventures tend to do. The players are drawn in to the story in a classic fashion of the lone survivor, who relays his tale to the PCs. Quick and simple set-up like this is keeping with the feel that is emphasized in Dungeon Crawl Classics, and I am glad that the adventure stuck to the tried and true formula. This little seen also allows for the players to get an excellent opportunity to introduce their characters as the ask questions of the survivor. Having enough role-playing opportunities to accommodate all types of players is a good adventure design. After this the adventuring gets underway.
The PCs are then treated to several clever encounters in a variety of locations. There are maps supplied where necessary and there are excellent descriptions for the judge to use to help set the scene for the players. I keep a little list on my computer of locations and where I can find a quick description for them when I am designing my own adventures. Attack of the Frawgs has several that made the list. Quick but descriptive descriptions are given for encounters at a tree platform, millhouse, dam, and the ever popular cave behind a waterfall, and more. There are more than enough original challenges to make sure that the PCs who survive have sense of accomplishment.
The adventure could be adapted for 1st level characters especially if you have a few characters that have perhaps already survived an adventure and deserve another chance at fortune and glory. Some of the set-up and encounters actually seems a little better suited to an experienced adventurer of 1st level (that is a funny thought) and while not a negative it is something that one of the players in my regular gaming group had to say as well.
The adventure should play quick and more than enough information and statistics are included in the layout to see that it does. With the price of the watermarked pdf slashed to $4.99 at Drive-Thru RPG your group can have a great night (or two) of dice rolling and hacking and slashing for a buck a piece. If your group enjoys Dungeon Crawl Classics then they will enjoy Attack of the Frawgs. It is also written as an alternate introduction to The Haunting of Larvik Island which is an excellent adventure that I reviewed here and is being converted for Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG soon.
